I have been freelance writing for several years now and have managed to turn it into a lucrative career that more than pays the bills while enabling me to do the other things that I want to in life. I often get asked by those that are curious – and those that are just skeptical how they can go about getting into the industry. It is surprisingly easy to find freelance work; if you know where to look. In this article I will give you the benefit of my expert knowledge to help you on your way to a successful career:
If you happen to have a friend or acquaintance than can open some doors for you then I would suggest starting with them. Not only will they instinctively be more inclined to want to help you out, but they will also know all of the pitfalls to avoid.
You can do it in stages, but I would suggest simply setting a day aside and biting the bullet. A google search will pull up details of three or four of the big freelance sites. Registration with all of these sites is quick and easy. However, setting up a strong profile that will pull potential clients towards you will take a little while. The good news is that once you have done the first one, you should be able to just copy and paste the info into the other sites.
With so many options available to you, simply knowing what kind of content you want to write will get you a long way. Don’t be dismissive of article writing as many newbies are. There is money to be made in articles and it is a very easy way in to the industry.
Yes, this is somewhat old school, but there is still mileage in this, otherwise no one would be doing it. The only problem that you might encounter is that demand is high, and many editors have a pool of writers that they turn to time and time again, so breaking into this field can be difficult.
Yes, this will cost you the price of an advert but it is a route less well-trodden these days. I am not suggesting for one second that you take out a full page ad in an expensive newsletter or publication. You should be able to find some smaller publications at a more competitive rate. Just make sure that you check details of the demographic of their readership to ensure that you are targeting. your advert to the right people.
If you intend to become a good writer, this blog will surely help you out!

Keep your source list updated and continue expanding your search options. Sometimes writers are not able to land good writing jobs because they don’t expand where they look. In many cases good jobs are not advertised. You need know where to look and who to get in touch with when it comes to reputable sources with writing job leads. Great writers will know where to go to get work. This means your resource list should be diverse with leads in different niches. You should have an idea of which niches and writing jobs are in demand and those that offer lucrative earnings on a regular basis.
