Online Jobs In Freelance Writing: Things To Know For Beginners

As a beginner freelance writer, you probably have several questions regarding online jobs. These questions usually range from knowing the paying markets to the various types of writing gigs available online. Getting started has never been easy but when you do that on the right footing, it can be fun writing online as a beginner. Have fun as you apply the following tips to your writing adventure:

  • Start Small: You may have heard that people charge upwards of $100 per hour for writing projects, yes it is true but then, there is nothing wrong with starting small as a beginner. It does not mean that your services are not of high quality, no. When you start small, it creates an opportunity for you to grow your portfolio which will then help you to increase your hourly rate as you gain more clients and steady work-flow. Remember, you can always ask your clients for a raise as soon as you have stamped your foot in the online writing industry. Yes, start small and grow bigger.

  • Search for Jobs: Working online means you have to browse freelance job listings. There are several websites and job boards that are designed mainly for posting writing opportunities. From blogging to creative writing, you are sure to see reasonably priced jobs. Don’t be afraid of rejection, it is common with beginners. Just make sure to submit impressive pitches and within a short period, you will land your first online job in freelance writing.

  • Have core specialization: As a beginner freelance writer, you have higher chances of getting good paying jobs if you specialize in a given niche. If for example, you are a medical practitioner, you stand better chances of getting writing jobs in the Health, Nutrition and Fitness niches. If you are a caterer, you stand better chances in the Food and Nutrition niches.

  • Have Fun: Yes, when you write on topics that interest you, it does not seem like a job anymore as you enjoy what you do. If you like cooking, there is every tendency that you will enjoy writing articles or blog posts on recipes, etc. The same thing applies to a fashion designer who has been commissioned to write on the current trends in fashion.

  • Say “No” To Free Trials: As a beginner, you might be tempted to give in to certain clients’ demands for free trial articles or blog posts. If they really want to know if you can deliver, direct them to your portfolio because that is why you have it – to showcase your capabilities. Don’t work for free.

You can make the most of online freelance writing if you stick to these basics and more. But most importantly, always check a client’s profile before you agree to work with him/her or apply for his or her job. Such client should be a paying client who maintains good working relationship with freelancers.
